    • Our union has been protecting Oak Bay Residents since 1969

    Our Oak Bay Professional Firefighters are proud members of the International Association of Fire Fighters, local number 1856. We formed our union in 1969, but we have been protecting the residents of Oak Bay Since 1939 out of this fire station. Today we have 30 union IAFF members, each dedicating themselves to the residents of Oak Bay and the Capital Region through mutual aid and automatic aid agreements. Our union members raises money through charity events for our local community, high schools, hospitals on lower Vancouver Island and the BCPFFA Burn Fund in Vancouver. Oak Bay Firefighters Charity along with other locals in the CRD pledged $250.000 to the neo natal care unit at Victoria General Hospital, and have exceeded that commmittment with a second year and $350,000 of funds so far.     Firefighters do this charity work while off duty, and receive no fire department assistance. Some members give monthly donations through automatic pay reduction, while otherspersonally donate to one of the chairties we support - like the cancer fund, hospital foundations, vocational awards etc. Everyone in our union gives their time, while off duty, to support these events and more throughout the entire CRD.     CRD HazMat Response team

    IAFF Local 1856 Firefighters serve as members of the Capital Region District's Hazardous Materials Team. Oak Bay Local 1856 members were instrumental in this teams formation and early success, all our officers stepped up to become the team leaders, and contributed thousands of hours developing training and standards of the team at its inception in late 2005 and early 2006. Today we still have members who continue to lead this team

    First Responders

    IAFF Local 1856 Firefighters are part of the BCEHS as first responders. We assist the provincial ambulance service with patient pre-hospital care, including AED and CPR care for residents in our Municipality. First Reposnders are more than half of our emergency calls, and mostly we arrive before the Provinsial Ambulance to provide patient care and stabilization of residents. Cohesicvely working togetherether with BCAS.
